CE – The Big Picture: The EU requires that products comply with all applicable CE Directives prior to import or sale in the European Union. However, most manufacturers are not familiar with the complete list of CE Directives. And almost all test labs are not familiar with the full CE picture.
Missing Directives: Unfortunately, a lot of manufacturers are applying the CE mark without complying with the full CE requirements. Which means that critical CE Directives are left off the important CE Declaration of Conformity document, making it obvious to all knowledgeable persons. Often times that happens because the manufacturer called a test lab and requested a CE quote, and the lab only quoted for the directives they know and can perform, never mentioning that other CE Directives apply.
CE – Manufacturer’s/Importer’s Responsibility: It is the manufacturer/importers responsibility to make sure that they are complying with all applicable CE Directives, not the test lab. So it is important for manufacturers to know the CE Big Picture and whether their products comply with all applicable CE requirements.
If you don’t know what CE Directives and EN Standards apply to your products, it would be a good idea to get a Preliminary CE Review done by a compliance engineer who is experienced in identifying the Directives & Standards and who also can tell you where you stand.
